Fall Decluttering: Transform your Garage & Shed

Author | Kiki Wootten

Happy fall, y’all! As the leaves begin to change color and the air turns crisp, fall is the perfect time to throw on your coziest sweatshirt and work outside. As always, we’re here to guide you through the process and share some essential tips to reclaim your garage and shed spaces.

Steps to Declutter your Garage & Shed

Step 1: Group Similar Items

The first step in decluttering and organizing your storage space is to group similar items into basic categories. Common categories include: gardening supplies, power tools, sporting equipment, and chemicals like pest control or weed killer. Creating these categories helps you gain a better understanding of what you have and makes it easier to assign dedicated spaces for each.

Step 2: Purge, baby!

Think back to summer and spring and ask yourself, “Did I use this over the past 6 months?”. If the answer is “no”, then it's probably time to let it go. Consider donating, recycling, or properly disposing of items you no longer need.

Step 3: Storage

When it comes to storage, use what ya got! We encourage you to save money when and where you can, but if you’re itching to buy new, then opt for clear containers with lids. Clear containers allow you to see the contents at a glance, saving you time searching for specific items. Lids are essential to protect your belongings from dust and dirt that can easily accumulate in these outdoor spaces. Extra credit: do your future self a favor and label the outside of your bins! We love label makers ‘round here, but masking tape and a sharpie does the job too.

Step 4: Create Zones

To maintain an organized space, create “zones” within your garage and shed. Each category should have its designated area, and within those zones, use shelves, hooks, and racks to maximize vertical storage. Utilize wall space to hang tools and equipment, keeping the floor clear of clutter.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance

Once you've achieved a clutter-free and organized storage space, make it a habit to perform regular maintenance. Set aside time each season to go through your belongings, assess what you need, and make adjustments as necessary. This prevents clutter from accumulating again.

We love a good fall garage declutter, but we’d be delighted to hear from you!
